Wired In
Recently I
took some photographs of bark
peeling away from a tree trunk.
These images led me to consider
layering, not just in the natural
world but also in our everyday
lives. Thinking about the
human body and how we layer
clothes I found myself
researching underwear and was
fascinated by the corset. In
the early years the structure of
the corset was such that it
contained and restricted the body
with whale and steel boning, not
only causing considerable
discomfort but damaging internal
organs and the spine. Therefore
the body was encased, constricted
and manipulated by this one
garment. Although the
corset is quite rigid it did
however mould and emphasise the
female form with its natural
curves and softness. I wish
to evoke the thought of a body
trapped not just by the materials
used, the fabrics or boning but
also by fashion. However
there is the sense that the
female form is trying to escape
the constraints placed upon it by
the corset.Seonaid
