Jackies
work is largely three-dimensional, and is
concerned with the integration of
seemingly diverse materials and
techniques. By bringing the past and
present together, using traditional and
contemporary techniques and materials,
she creates pieces that are both
harmonious and progressive. She
particularly loves the fact that textiles
come from a living source, and can have
many lives. The prospects of
transformation and metamorphosis excite
Jackie, and she sees textiles as a
parallel of the work undertaken by people
as they reclaim their lives following
trauma and other damaging life
experiences.
Her sources of inspiration are often
based in abstract concepts, and she loves
the challenge of discovering what the
abstract would look like if it existed
physically. All the while, quietly
enjoying posing the questions, and
challenging the viewer to delve more
deeply into their own interpretations and
understanding of these concepts.
Senses and the sensuous are extremely
important. Jackies work often
involves finding ways to combine
contrasting materials - velvet and metal,
textile and acrylic - materials that can
be both soft and fluid or hard and
strong.
Extensive research forms the groundwork
for all of Jackies work. She
believes that only by learning about the
topic, and starting to understand, can
she then begin to design and create.
