I
have an undeniable attraction to the
natural local landscape especially the
fact the most interesting bit is usually
furthest away. Whilst
trying to puzzle out the distant view I
am often distracted by the textures
beneath my feet and also the gap between
the two which is sometimes birds, insects
or even weather. Almost a stage set
with a background, foreground and tabs in
between.Textile as
a medium enables me to show a great depth
of texture and often a 3 dimensional
surface. I work and rework samples to
achieve an effect that pleases me.
My textile work accommodates two distinct
ways of thinking. One involves the
surface, motif, pattern, repetition and
the illusion of dimension that skilful
placement of colour and form can trick
the eye into believing. The other
involves the structure, as I ruthlessly
disrupt the smooth surface tension of the
fabrics, snipping and cutting into the
layers that are sewn together, allowing
the colours and textures buried beneath
the surface to rise.
