Having
lived in various places around the world,
Pakistan, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Iran and
Japan, and having visited many others,
especially India, from the 60s onwards,
Ann has been fortunate enough to acquire
a large collection of ethnic textiles at
source. The techniques involved in these
textiles have always fascinated her, and
on her return to the UK she was excited
by the prospect of exploring them further
through her own work, and finding ways to
incorporate traditional, ethnic
techniques, in a vibrant contemporary
setting.
With
a background in natural sciences (a B.Sc.
in Zoology and a Ph.D. in Fish
Physiology), Anns work is often
based upon the natural world. She is
currently exploring the possibilities of
working with purely natural dyes and
fabrics, and is expanding her experiments
with indigo to include other natural
dyes.
Whilst
living in Indonesia, Ann helped set up an
organization to promote folk arts, and in
Japan she was involved in one of the
largest print shows in Japan. The
Far East remains the main source of
inspiration for Anns work, and she
is keen to investigate both the social
and aesthetic qualities of textiles. She
is particularly fascinated by the spread
of ethnic textiles around the world,
through trade or religion (the two
usually go together), and how different
cultural influences can be echoed in
textiles from other parts of the world.
