| The Sea |
I
have always been interested in textiles.
Living in different countries, mostly in
S.E. Asia, enabled me to look at
similarities and differences in textiles,
and to see how textiles have transferred
from one area to another. In Japan in
particular I was fascinated by textile
design; the apparent simplicity is
especially thought provoking. I shall
continue with a Japanese influenced
style, using shibori (dye resist) with
indigo on silk and silk velvet.
I
want to explore the Sea as a theme. This
is where all life originated. The sea
occupies the majority of our planet and
has a huge influence on our lives; in
fact it would be more realistic to call
our planet The Sea, rather than The
Earth. The life forms it contains
are many, varied and experimental forms.
We are really only aware of the sea-life
present where the land meets the sea.
In the deepest parts of the oceans life
evolved in the absence of light, while
some forms produce their own light,
bioluminescence. All life in this
environment is adapted to very high
pressures and low temperatures.
